The Christian Right is Neither

One again one of the “Christian” people on my friends list has posted a meme which says in part that here are Americans that are on the same path that Germans were during the Holocaust in Nazi Germany.  I believe the same thing, the difference I is that I believe the people leading others down that path call themselves conservative or right wing Christians, not the progressive liberals as implied.

This is the second meme I’ve seen today that frankly I find repugnant.  The other was concerning the so called War on Christmas; it’s been knocking around facebook for a year now.

I’ve always been taught that perpetuating a lie is the same as making up something yourself, and the last time I looked “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor,” is still the ninth commandment.   The only thing I can make of this is that there are an awful lot of people out there that want to believe a lie; they want this so much that they think the people calling them down for the lie are the ones lying.

And this brings me to 2nd Thessalonians, Chapter 2, and I quote from the NIV version: “10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.”

So I ask each and every one of you, the next time you pass around something that is insulting, or could be a lie, take time to check it out.  The Nativity Picture meme doesn’t even make logical sense.  You wouldn’t want to be the one that is deceived yourself because you refuse to see the truth.  One thing for sure I don’t believe God lies to anyone, however he did give us free will and part of that free will is the ability to lie to ourselves, to allow some to believe that they are persecuted when in all reality they are the one doing the persecuting.  I do believe God is very good at giving people enough rope to hang themselves.

Were the Good Old Days Really that Good?

Today one of the people I went to high school with posted a link to one of her older blogs, you know the kind that laments about how much freedom we had as children and how much children lack that same freedom today.  It paints such a rosy picture of the past, it morns for the passing of the late fifties and early sixties.  I have come to believe that people pass this meme around to justify their unprogressive ideas, it’s a kind of rationalization, those times were good compared to today.

From Mena’s Wisdom
What on Earth has become of our Country, our Continent and our whole world?  What’s the matter with kids today?  What has come over adults to believe that they are powerful enough to control the forces of nature of our living, breathing planet?  Who and what can we blame for this global warming (not that it hasn’t happened before)?   And, what’s going on with our corrupt leaders, our corrupt nations and the people who pretend to care?  What the hell is this business of being politically correct?  Why won’t our Federal Government protect our borders from allowing the drug cartels from all over the world to come in?  Surely the drug cartels do not fall among the “...Your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”
I have become one of those old fogies that ask these questions…one of those old people (babyboomers) that the present administration is trying to squeeze out of the “economy”.
What’s going on with people that they don’t own up to responsibility for themselves and their families?  How has it come to the point here in the United States of America, where the American Dream is to be able to work hard and make a good life, that the harder you work and the more you make, the more our government will take away from you?”

She goes on to ask other questions,  makes a rant about cell phones in schools, but it almost always boils down to why aren’t things like I thought they were and who can I blame because I don’t like today so much.

I’ve thought about this a lot lately and you know what happened, we did – yes we as in the “baby boomers” happened.  And we got so wrapped up in me that we forgot that there were other people out there in the world that were not just like us, you know the different ones.  They might have been poorer, they might have been orphans, they might have had a different color skin, but since you don’t remember them, they didn’t exist.

We know our children are not safe because we knew we were not, we may not actually remember why we thought that way but we did and it showed.  I know I wouldn’t let my own daughter walk to school even though I had done it most of my elementary school days and then I remembered Nancy.  And I remembered Nancy shoving me out into the street in front of a car that barely missed me.  I remember being teased unmercifully until finally I got mad enough to do something; it’s a good thing she could run faster than me because I just might have killed her with the turning fork I picked up trying to defend myself.

So my question is why do you think eight year olds should be so self-sufficient that they can handle bullies all by themselves.  Why do you believe that people with no money, people that have worked hard all their lives deserve to die just because they cannot afford lifesaving treatment?  Why do you believe that everyone who needs something is out to get what you believe you’ve worked hard for?   It’s not the have-nots that are squeezing you it’s the ones that have so much they can’t see any reason not to have more, you know the ones that have already bled the poor and are now working on the middle class.

So no I don’t want to go back to the fifties where a stroke of bad luck could cause a personal economic downfall so bad that no one could recover.  I don’t want to go back to the time when women were told their place and they believed it was right.  I don’t want to go back to the time when the “huddled masses ruining to be free,” were only white Europeans and no one else need apply unless we needed someone to work for next to nothing keeping our houses clean.

I don’t want to go back to a time when cancer was a death sentence and newspapers ran polio counts in the summer.  I don’t’ want to go back to the days when children went to school hungry.  Those were not the good old days.

No one is trying to take things away from you, they are however trying to make things avaliable to more people.  Life is not a zero-sum-game, where winning means someone else is losing something.  Your freedom isn't deminished just because you have to share it with others.

If you think cell phones are bad at school, just wait until every student will have an I-Pad, when all their text books will be downloaded onto it, and it will be complete with access to the internet for entertainment and education reasons.  The truth is you have to grow with the times like it or not, and the world we die in will not be the world we made it will be the one our grandchildren make and hopefully it really will be kinder and people will finally learn that the Bill of Rights protects everyone, and not just the select few with economic clout.

Bring Back Kathryn Janeway

I have been involved in the Bring Back Kathryn Janeway movement just about since the beginning. At first the single goal of bringing Voyager’s Kathryn Janeway back into Trek Literature was enough, but as time has passed I have grown more and more concerned about the whole of Pocket Book’s vision for Star Trek.

This is kind of interesting since I've never read any of his books.
During my research for the Bring Back Janeway Campaign, I discovered an interesting thing. It's called "Women in Refrigerators Syndrome" and it fit the condition of Kathryn Janeway and her condition in Trek Literature and Pocket Books.

Here is a link to my page and my conclusions. What do you think?

Vote to Bring Back Janeway in this pole.

The Trek BBS forum has a repetition among Voyager fans as being somewhat anti Captain Janeway. They have a forum devoted to Trek Books there, where authors and Pocket Book editors read the posts and take part in the conversations. Today I found a pole there to vote whether to "Bring Back Janeway" or "Keep her dead". The pole will be open until May 7th but we need all the Janeway fans to go vote in this pole to Bring Back Janeway. This is a pole that will be noticed by people with connections to Pocket Books.

If you are a member of the Trek BBS (or if you don't mind becoming a member) please go to the pole and vote to Bring Janeway Back.

Here is the link http://trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=118469

Please go vote right now because with 59 votes the keep her dead option is leading two to one and I know that this is wrong, there are far more fans that want Janeway back than 19.

I believe it’s time to have another “Bring Back Janeway” letter writing campaign. I know that this whole process is frustrating and that sometimes it seems that we have not accomplished anything, but I believe that we did have a hand in getting rid of Margaret Clark, and I believe we can have an influence on the new Voyager novel.

KathrynJ and I have started a Face Book Community and all the information including addresses and a sample letter have been placed together here. http://www.newearth-jcparadise.de/bring_back_janeway.php

The dates for mailing letters are Monday March 29th for Europeans and Monday April 5th for Americans. However if you cannot make these dates please send a letter anyway, they will all count.

I would like to say something here, especially to those that took part in last year’s letter campaign and to those that may feel discouraged. I knew going in last year that the goal wouldn’t be met quickly, nothing moves quickly in the publishing world, the very best I hoped was to get an announcement that Janeway would be brought back, but I wasn’t holding my breath for that either.

Last year when we wrote our letters, both “Full Circle” and “Unworthy” had already been written. It is very likely that “Full Circle” was printed, bound and ready for distribution and that “Unworthy” was at the printers even as we wrote. There was never much hope to change either of those but this time we are catching the writer, editor and publisher before the book has been finished, this time, in only one year, things are very different.

I have made no secret that I have ambitions to write original romance novels, because of that I have made it my business to try to understand how that business works and I’ve learned a lot. One thing is that for the first time in probably 100 years publishers are expected to make money (they were not before and were considered by their owners as tax write offs) there was never the pressure to actually sell books as there is now. I learned that as an average novelist I could expect to make about 10,000.00 a year which means in America you would be well below the poverty level. Star Trek novelists are not doing much if any better.

What you all need to know is that you actually did get results last year but you had to have been following what was happening inside of Pocket Books to see that. The big thing is that Margaret Clark lost her job in just about six months, which would have been the right time to see if people were buying “Full Circle” and “Unworthy.” If the books had been successful, then she would still have that job. I am relatively sure that we all had a hand in that one.

The need to make a profit is one of the big changes, but the publishing industry is challenged by e-publishing, most especially by Sony’s E-reader and Amazon’s Kindle. Trek Lit has a new Editor, and as I said Pocket Books has had Abrams pull his approval for the production of books based on the last Star Trek Movie.

The darling up to that point wasn’t Picard and Next Generation, the darling was Abram’s Spock and Uhura and the new Captain Kirk. I don’t believe any character is safe until they all are.

Finally one huge enormous thing happened, in December “Avatar” opened and has made more money than any other movie. That was the game stopper. I can guarantee you that every facet of the entertainment industry is going to be looking at how to exploit that success and publishers (who now have to make a profit) are going to be scrutinizing everything they can find out. They will want to know how they can translate that success into making anything they produce successful.

All of this can work in our favor, but the only way we can be sure that it won’t is to not make our wishes known. A letter doesn’t take that much time and it can change everything.

While I would like to have as many letters as possible, I am not trying to start a debate as to whether we should or should not do this. I am going to write and hope that some of you will join me.

Dec. 13th, 2009

If my ankle wasn’t so stiff, I’d be doing the happy dance, because you see I won, and the big prize wasn’t the books but in one single bit of feedback.

What did I win, you may ask? Well this week several blogs have been having a SFR Holiday Blitz, with “The Galaxy Express” leading the way.

“Alien Romances” was another of the participants.

I posted comments on several of the blogs. Yesterday the winners of the free books were announced and I won for “Alien Romances.” I cannot say enough good things about either of the blogs. Along with “Enduring Romance,” and “Spacefreighter’s Lounge” they are some of my very favorite places to hang out in the internet.

I won books on “Alien Romances” but I won even more with one comment. Jacqueline Lichtenberg has long been one of my favorite authors and I cannot say enough good things about her discussions of writing. All the ladies there are great heroes of mine now, but it was Jacqueline that led me there in the first place. She commented on my win and I am being a total fan girl here, and that is something I haven’t done in several years (probably not since Shayenne sent me a PM for the first time on VAMB.)

Here is the announcement of my winning.

Those few words mean more to me than any of the books.
